MC1850D
Source extraction controls dust at the point it’s generated. But in most industrial workspaces, it doesn’t catch everything; fine particles escape into the general atmosphere and stay there, dispersing through the room and settling on surfaces long after the process has stopped. The MC1850D is designed to deal with what’s already airborne, continuously drawing in room air, filtering it through a large-area HEPA H13 stage, and returning it clean. It’s one of the more versatile ambient filtration units available for industrial and commercial environments.
Overview
Room air is drawn in through a 0.7 m² pre-filter that captures coarser particles before they reach the main filter stage. It then passes through a 10 m² HEPA H13 microfilter, a very large filter area for a portable unit, that removes particles down to 0.3 microns with high efficiency. Clean air is exhausted upwards to avoid disturbing settled dust on the floor. The fan speed is continuously variable, allowing the airflow to be dialled back during quieter periods to reduce energy consumption and noise, then increased during active production. A filter indicator lamp signals when the pre-filter needs replacing, and an operating hour meter allows the service history of each filter to be accurately tracked.
Built for flexibility
The MC1850D can be operated vertically in its standard position or laid horizontally flat on the floor, useful in low-headroom environments or where the unit needs to be positioned beneath equipment or racking. It can also connect directly to an exhaust hose for localised extraction without reducing performance, extending its usefulness beyond general ambient filtration to more targeted applications. At 30kg on heavy-duty transport wheels, it moves easily between workstations, buildings, or sites.
Why this matters for compliance
Under COSHH, the hierarchy of controls requires employers to reduce exposure to hazardous substances as far as reasonably practicable. Source extraction is typically the primary control, but where residual airborne dust is still measurable in the breathing zone, ambient air cleaning forms part of the documented control strategy. For substances such as RCS and hardwood dust, where WELs are low and HSE enforcement has tightened considerably, a second line of control is not an optional extra. McCarthy Hire can assess whether ambient filtration is warranted in your workplace as part of a COSHH assessment or LEV inspection, and specify and supply the MC1850D where the dust profile supports it.

Typical Applications and Industries
Where it’s used
The MC1850D is regularly used in woodworking and joinery shops, bakeries and food production facilities, construction sites, abatement and decontamination projects, and manufacturing environments where respirable dust, including RCS (respirable crystalline silica), wood dust, and flour dust, is generated as part of normal operations. It works as a secondary control alongside source extraction or LEV systems, addressing the residual airborne fraction that fixed extraction doesn’t fully capture.
Operating Capability
Why Hire the MC380DF LEV System?
Hiring the MC380DF provides a cost-effective and compliant solution for temporary or trial production, small-batch manufacturing or short-term projects. LEV hire allows businesses to maintain safe and healthy working conditions without the capital investment, ongoing maintenance or storage requirements associated with ownership.
Its portability, versatility and high capture efficiency make it ideal for electronics manufacturers, laser operators, and engraving workshops that require temporary or mobile extraction solutions.
